& what you are is beautiful |
Sex and nerdery. Occasionally both at the same time. |
Just a thought. I talk to a lot of people who feel that Valentine’s Day is too corporate, kinda dumb, etc. etc. I feel like that’s the prevailing attitude among the circles I run in. And for the most part, I agree. I think that if you don’t want to celebrate it, you certainly don’t have to. Letting society dictate when and how you express love for someone doesn’t fly for everyone.
However, on the flip side, I kinda like a day that, in its essence, really celebrates love. I know, it’s all about the chocolate and flowers these days. I prefer to think of it as “hey, a day when society allows us to be extra goopy if we want. Great.” And sure enough, it makes me a little sentimental and mushy. And it’s not because I have to! It’s because I want to, and it’s fun to give gifts (no flowers or chocolate were given this year, though) and generally make a point of being extra couple-y.
I feel a little guilty for being into Valentine’s Day, though. All the enlightened, cynical people are probably shaking their heads at me, thinking “oh, she’s one of those people who’s bought into it. Gross.” But you know… who cares? I enjoy myself. I had a really nice evening with my lover. And that’s what really matters, hey? Not public opinion, but doing what you like to do, and having fun.
So: be romantic, be cynical, go out for dinner, watch TV, buy ridiculously overpriced chocolate for someone, buy sale chocolate for yourself, buy nothing at all. It’s all good.
